Miriam Kantor – Titanic 2nd Class Survivor

Miriam Kantor was a Russian-born second class passenger aboard the Titanic, travelling with her husband Sinai Kantor to begin a new life and studies in the United States. She survived the sinking, but her husband did not, and this artwork commemorates her journey from Vitebsk to New York.

Miriam Kantor – A New Life Interrupted by Tragedy

Miriam Kantor was born on 10 August 1887 in Vitebsk, in what was then the Russian Empire (present-day Belarus), the daughter of Woolf Sternin and Sara Murinson, from a Jewish family. She married Sinai Kantor, and the couple, both believed to be university graduates, were travelling together with the intention that Miriam would pursue dentistry studies in the United States.

Miriam and Sinai Kantor boarded the Titanic at Southampton on 10 April 1912 as second class passengers, holding ticket number 244367 (£26). They likely travelled in the company of fellow passenger Israel Nesson, whose ticket number was consecutive to theirs.

On the night of the sinking, Miriam Kantor survived, though the exact lifeboat she was placed in remains uncertain, with Lifeboat 10 or 12 suggested by different accounts. Her husband Sinai did not survive the disaster. Miriam was rescued by the Carpathia and arrived in New York on 18 April 1912.

She declared her intention to become a US citizen on 24 June 1912 and was naturalised by 1918. She settled in Brooklyn, New York, where she worked as a pharmacist, and never remarried. In her later years she was cared for as a patient at Rockland State Hospital, where she died on 26 August 1950 at the age of 63. She was buried at Wellwood Cemetery in West Babylon, New York.

This artwork is dedicated to Miriam Kantor: a young woman who survived the Titanic disaster only to lose her husband to the sea, and who went on to rebuild a life for herself in a new country. The abstract blue composition evokes the sea, movement and depth, while the shimmering details suggest both fragility and endurance. It is not only a tribute to a survivor, but also a fragment of a much larger commemorative project honouring every passenger and crew member connected to the Titanic.
