Antti Wilhelm Sivola (also recorded as Antti Wiljam Sihvola) was born on 1 April 1891 in Ruotsinpyhtää, Finland, the son of Matti Sihvola and Anna Tomasdotter. He had an elder brother, Matti, born in 1887. Antti worked as a general labourer in Finland.
On 30 March 1912, Antti obtained a passport in Uusimaa, Finland, to emigrate to the United States. He intended to settle in Mountain Home, Idaho, where family and friends already lived, and where he had been promised employment by a family friend, Andrew Honga. A local newspaper described him at the time as „a young man of Finland, who was enroute to Mountain Home where he was to have received employment.“
Antti boarded the Titanic as a third class passenger at Southampton on 10 April 1912, holding ticket number 3101280, for a fare of £7 18s 6d.
He died when the Titanic sank on 15 April 1912. His body, if recovered, was never identified. His parents subsequently received £75 from the Mansion House Titanic Relief Fund and £50 in compensation from the White Star Line.
This artwork by Dodo Newman commemorates Antti Wilhelm Sivola, a young man whose journey toward a new life in America was cut short by the disaster.
